The Dog Mentor

Our Dog Mentor Program is a valued part of school life and supports pupils’ emotional wellbeing, confidence, and readiness to learn. Based on the nationally recognised Dog Mentor approach, the programme uses the special bond between children and dogs to promote calm, positive relationships and emotional regulation.

Our school dog, Chewie, is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a gentle, friendly nature that makes him ideally suited to working with children. Chewie is owned by Mr O’Grady and is supported during school visits by three other specially trained handlers, who together take full responsibility for his care, wellbeing, and interactions with pupils at all times.

Chewie’s visits provide a calm, reassuring presence in school. For many children, spending time with him helps to reduce anxiety, build confidence, and encourage communication in a relaxed, non-judgemental way. The programme also helps pupils develop empathy, kindness, and respect for animals, reinforcing our wider school values.

The Dog Mentor Program always operates within clear guidelines, with pupil safety and dog welfare at the heart of everything we do. Chewie’s visits are carefully planned, supervised, and hugely enjoyed by both pupils and staff, making a positive contribution to our school community.
